The Fijian government’s strategy focuses on making affordable housing accessible to all citizens. During a meeting with stakeholders and residents in Nadawa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad emphasized the Coalition Government’s dedication to tackling essential issues related to informal settlements.
The National Development Plan, set to be launched soon, is expected to include mechanisms aimed at addressing the broader challenges posed by informal settlements. Professor Prasad stated that while he cannot guarantee immediate solutions, the government aims to thoroughly understand issues that have persisted over the past 25 years, including previous agreements.
In his discussion, Professor Prasad highlighted the need for solutions regarding residents obtaining proper land titles, as well as improvements in drainage and access to essential utility services such as sewerage, electricity, and water. The meeting featured representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Housing, Nasinu Land Purchase & Housing Co-operative Ltd, and local community representatives.
He suggested that further discussions be held with all relevant stakeholders to work towards amicable resolutions that will benefit the residents.
