The Fiji Meat Industry Board (FMIB) is in discussions to acquire a 15 to 20-acre parcel of land in Navuso for the relocation of the Suva abattoir. FMIB has notified the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs that the Minister for Agriculture has emphasized the importance of prioritizing this relocation.
Board members explained to the committee that the current location of the Suva abattoir in Nakasi has caused disturbances due to unpleasant odors from the rendering plant, which poses potential health risks to the local community. They noted that increasing development and population growth in the area, along with FMIB’s strategic plan, have led to the Minister’s directive to prioritize this move.
The board revealed that they have identified a potential site and have commenced negotiations, with further meetings and evaluations scheduled to finalize the relocation plans. FMIB also mentioned that the funding required for this project would be significant and that they would explore external funding sources to assist with the costs.
