Fiji’s $400M Bet on Tourism: A Path to Prosperity?

The World Bank has announced a commitment of $400 million over the next ten years to foster economic development in the Northern Division. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement during the launch of the NaVualiku-Fiji Tourism Development Program at the Wasawasa Hotel in Savusavu last night.

Rabuka described the “Na Vualiku Program” as an integral part of the Coalition Government’s initiative to create a resilient and sustainable future that preserves the natural heritage for future generations. He emphasized that the program’s core vision is to cultivate a more prosperous and resilient Fiji.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the Na Vualiku Program will invest in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, ensuring that the residents of Vanua Levu have the necessary resources for healthier and more fulfilling lives.

“Tourism remains a significant driver of our economy. Recent statistics from the Reserve Bank of Fiji indicate a strong influx of visitors, with nearly 100,000 arrivals in July and over 94,000 in August. These figures underscore Fiji’s attractiveness as a sought-after destination for holidaymakers, business travelers, and those visiting friends and family,” he stated.

Rabuka expressed confidence that the Na Vualiku Program will play a pivotal role in shaping Fiji’s future, enhancing Vanua Levu’s potential and establishing a legacy of growth, sustainability, and opportunity for everyone.
