Fiji’s $198M Infrastructure Overhaul: What’s Next?

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) reported that it allocated $198 million for maintenance, renewal, and capital projects during the 2020-2021 fiscal year, as revealed in its recent annual report presented to Parliament.

The funds were invested in various significant rural and urban projects of considerable complexity. FRA noted that measuring the number of completed planned projects is challenging due to many being long-term endeavors that span multiple years.

The report highlights that several capital projects involve non-physical work elements carried out in the 2020/2021 financial year, which are part of the development pipeline and intended for future construction.

As a result, FRA has chosen to evaluate its performance based on the completion of planned work on projects rather than the completion of the projects themselves.

To enhance monitoring and reporting on project performance, FRA acknowledged the need for more advanced project management tools. The authority plans to implement an enterprise management system to facilitate increased scrutiny and more detailed reporting on program delivery aspects.

Despite experiencing some project delays during this period—common in programs of this scale and complexity—there is an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement.
