The Department of Energy in Fiji has made a significant investment of approximately $19.1 million in Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) over the last three financial years, aimed at grid extension and house wiring projects. This funding has enabled 111 grid-funded initiatives, positively impacting over 1,500 households nationwide, as reported by Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau.
As of last month, 38 of these initiatives have been officially launched. Tuisawau also indicated that $2.13 million has been allocated for further expanding electricity access in communities, and EFL is set to continue these projects over the next two years.
In addition to grid projects, the government has committed around $4 million in the current financial year for solar home system installations specifically targeting rural and maritime villages. The Fiji Rural Electrification Fund, established as a dedicated body, aims to effectively execute rural electrification strategies.
These recent efforts align with a notable 10 percent increase in on-grid electricity demand reported by EFL, which exceeds the typical annual growth rate of three to four percent. This uptick is attributed to both commercial and domestic growth, reflecting Fiji’s advancement in infrastructure and energy accessibility. The government’s dedication to improving electricity services is crucial for these developments, ensuring that more communities gain reliable energy.
Collectively, these investments not only address rising energy needs but also represent a proactive approach to sustainable development, empowering local communities and encouraging economic growth in Fiji. The blend of renewable energy initiatives alongside traditional grid improvements illustrates a well-rounded strategy to tackle immediate demands while supporting long-term sustainability objectives.
