From August 1, 2021, to July 31, 2022, the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) distributed approximately $12.86 million in compensation, according to its 2022 annual report recently presented in Parliament.
During this period, the ACCF received a total of 840 applications, with 335 pertaining to motor vehicle accidents, 472 related to employment accidents, and 33 concerning school accidents.
For motor vehicle accidents alone, the commission paid out about $7.16 million, covering 42 death applications and 394 injury claims. The report identified the main causes of motor vehicle incidents as speeding, driving under the influence, dangerous and careless driving, driver fatigue, hit-and-run situations, and pedestrians being at fault.
In terms of employment accidents, around $5.35 million was allocated, which included 17 death claims and 356 injury claims.
For school accidents, the commission paid out approximately $0.35 million based on 48 injury applications, with common causes including slips, trips, falls, impacts with objects, and assaults.
