The Opposition caucus in the Parliament will continue functioning as independent MPs following the deregistration of FijiFirst as a political party. The decision means they will operate without party affiliation until the next steps are agreed upon.
The Election Supervisor, Ana Mataiciwa, unveiled the party’s deregistration yesterday. The move comes after the party failed to amend their constitution to improve handling of members’ grievances, which led to its removal from official party registration.
Despite being allocated till June 28, 2024, to implement the needed alterations, FijiFirst failed to meet the requirements, leading to their immediate deregistration under Section 12(4) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding & Disclosures) Act, 2013.
Members of the disbanded party have responded with mixed feelings. Senior Opposition MP Premila Kumar acknowledged the significant contributions the party made under the leadership of Voreqe Bainimarama. She confirmed that they will continue to serve as Opposition independent members.
MP Jone Usamate stated his respect for the Election Supervisor’s decision and confirmed their commitment to their parliamentary responsibilities. MP Alvick Maharaj mourned the party’s deregistration but committed to upholding its principles and legacy. Lastly, MP Penioni Ravunawa noted the new opportunities available to them as independent MPs under the electoral Act.
