Fijians Rally Behind Retired Soldier After Viral Car Accident

Spread the love

Iliesa Toga, a retired soldier and security guard, has expressed heartfelt gratitude following an outpouring of support from Fijians across the globe after a car accident he was involved in gained significant attention online. A video recording of Mr. Toga’s humble apology and willingness to take responsibility for the incident resonated with many, showcasing the spirit of community and empathy.

The incident occurred on October 18 at approximately 7:55 PM when Mr. Toga allegedly collided with the vehicle of Bhavik Verma in Narere, Nasinu. The young driver filmed Mr. Toga, who, unaware he was being recorded, was seen apologizing and promising to address the damages. During their conversation, Mr. Verma requested $500, to which Mr. Toga proposed a payment of $200, as he believed the damage was minor. He stated, “I told him I would pay $100 first, which I did, and planned to pay the other $100 the next day”.

The video sparked widespread empathy, and as of November 12, Mr. Toga had received approximately $3,347.38 through M-Paisa transfers from supporters around the world. He expressed his gratitude, saying, “Au vakavinavinaka saka,” and acknowledged the compassion shown to him from Fijians in the UK, US, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe, reinforcing a message of love prevailing over adversity.

However, Mr. Toga’s experience has not been entirely positive, as he has faced disturbing backlash, including threats directed towards Mr. Verma’s family on social media after the video went viral. In response, Mr. Toga urged for forgiveness and emphasized that “violence solves nothing.” He has filed a police report regarding the threats, although an official police response has yet to materialize. Mr. Verma, who initially posted the video, expressed regret over the situation spiraling out of control and remarked on his inability to reach Mr. Toga directly.

Sanjay, Mr. Verma’s father, has requested increased police patrols around their home due to the threats. Meanwhile, many have rallied to support Mr. Toga not only financially, as illustrated by comments from individuals like Dinesh Lal, who sent $202, but also through moral support, such as mechanic Deo Kumar offering free garage services.

Now contemplating legal action against Mr. Verma for defamation, Mr. Toga has decided to pause his plans to settle the remaining payment until the situation is resolved. Despite these challenges, Mr. Toga remains touched by the generosity of his fellow Fijians. The Land Transport Authority has highlighted the significance of their “Drive Safe, Celebrate Responsibly” campaign, which encourages responsible driving, particularly during the festive season.

This incident serves as a reminder of both the potential for positive community support during tough times and the need for compassion and understanding in our social interactions. Mr. Toga’s story emphasizes the resilience of community spirit, showcasing that even in adversity, there is hope, kindness, and the potential for healing.
