Iliesa Toga, a retired soldier and security guard from Fiji, has expressed heartfelt gratitude following an outpouring of support from people worldwide after a car accident involving him went viral. His humble and sincere response to the incident resonated with many, showcasing the spirit of compassion and community.
On October 18, around 7:55 PM, Mr. Toga was involved in a minor collision with Bhavik Verma’s car in Narere, Nasinu. Unbeknownst to Mr. Toga, Mr. Verma recorded their interaction, capturing Mr. Toga’s genuine apologies and willingness to cover the damages. During this discussion, Mr. Verma had requested $500 for repairs; however, Mr. Toga assessed the damages as minor and offered $200. He explained that he paid $100 immediately and intended to pay the rest the following day.
The video’s widespread circulation resulted in significant empathy from viewers, leading to Mr. Toga receiving $3,347.38 through M-Paisa transfers from supporters around the globe. In response to the kindness shown, Mr. Toga thanked supporters from countries including the UK, US, New Zealand, Australia, and various parts of Europe, highlighting that such goodwill truly demonstrates the power of love and community.
However, the situation took a troubling turn as allegations of threats directed towards Mr. Verma’s family arose on social media after the video’s release. Mr. Toga has urged for forgiveness and compassion, stating that “violence solves nothing.” He subsequently filed a police report regarding these threats, although no response has been forthcoming from the authorities.
Mr. Verma, who shared the footage on social media, admitted his intentions were simply to clarify Mr. Toga’s identity, but acknowledged that things escalated unnecessarily. He claimed to have tried contacting Mr. Toga but received no response.
Concerned for their safety amidst the threats, Mr. Verma’s father has called for additional police patrols around their home. On a positive note, support for Mr. Toga has not only been financial; many have offered moral support as well. Dinesh Lal, who donated $202, expressed his dismay over the treatment Mr. Toga received, while mechanic Deo Kumar offered complimentary garage services, emphasizing that no one deserves humiliation.
Now weighing the option of legal action for defamation against Mr. Verma, Mr. Toga has temporarily paused his plan to pay the remaining $100 until the issues surrounding the incident are resolved. Despite these challenges, Mr. Toga remains deeply touched by the generosity from his fellow Fijians, underscoring the importance of compassion in times of adversity. This incident has also renewed conversations around road safety, with Geraldine Panapasa from the Land Transport Authority reminding the public to prioritize responsible driving, especially during the festive season.
Overall, this story serves as a powerful reminder that during difficult times, community support can shine through, demonstrating kindness and unity amidst challenges.
