Fijians of Indian Descent Demand Acknowledgment for Coup Atrocities

Prominent figure Surendra Lal stated that Fijians of Indian descent in Labasa were specifically targeted during the coups. While addressing the Truth and Reconciliation steering committee in Labasa, Mr. Lal expressed that these individuals faced threats and harsh treatment, leading to a mistrust of the disciplined forces.

He noted that in 1987, cane farmers were particularly affected, recounting that they were often taken from town and forced to walk barefoot to camps. Mr. Lal emphasized that the victims deserve an apology for their mistreatment.

“We have not heard any reconciliation efforts directed towards those impacted by the coups. We have lost faith,” he remarked.

In response, Sashi Kiran, chairperson of the steering committee, stated that the commission would be established to address grievances from all ethnicities, not just one group. She assured that every ethnic community will have the opportunity to present their concerns.

“This commission will encompass various issues and aims for national reconciliation rather than focusing solely on individual cases,” Ms. Kiran added.
