Fijians Assured: No Cause for Concern After Speight’s Release

The recent release of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 coup, and Shane Stevens, former head of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit, should not worry Fijians, according to Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua. Both men were granted presidential pardons after serving over two decades in prison, a decision that has sparked varied responses from the public.

While some members of the community have welcomed their return to freedom, others are reminded of the painful events from 2000. Tikoduadua emphasized that the safety and security of Fijians remain a top priority and are not reliant on the presence of Speight or Stevens. “I assure the Fijian public that their safety and security is assured,” he stated.

The Minister acknowledged the different perspectives people may have regarding the pardons. He reassured citizens that a significant distance has been covered since 2000, highlighting ongoing reconciliation efforts in key institutions.

He also clarified that the legal framework allows convicted individuals the right to apply for mercy, as per the 2013 Constitution. The Mercy Commission, an independent body, reviewed the cases of Speight and Stevens, following the proper legal procedures.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka echoed these reassurances, stating, “You are very safe. You have nothing to worry about from Speight nor Mr. Stevens.”
