The Vodafone Fijiana XVs are set to continue their victory run in the WXV3 when they face off against Samoa in Dubai on Sunday morning, Fijian time.
In a Zoom interview on Thursday night, head coach Mosese Rauluni emphasized that they would not underestimate their Pacific rivals and are determined to secure a win. “Samoa is a very good side,” he cautioned. “We know they have a solid set of forwards, which they will likely utilize to their advantage.”
Rauluni noted that the team’s morale is high and they have remained focused on their objectives since the start of the competition. He mentioned that with Samoa losing their first game, they will be eager to taste victory.
To counter Samoa’s formidable forward pack, Fijiana XVs will feature six forwards and two backs on the bench. Rauluni stressed the importance of being aggressive at the breakdown and adhering to their game plan.
Despite facing a few injuries within the squad, he remains optimistic about the opportunities this presents for the selected players. “The heat is difficult to adjust to, but the girls are coping well,” he added.
The team has identified areas for improvement after their opening game against Hong Kong, China, which they won 38-3. First-five eight Jennifer Ravutia is set to team up with halfback Evivi Senikaviri to spearhead the attack against Samoa.
Fijiana XVs captain Karalaini Naisewa anticipates a physical confrontation on match day. “We trust our players will go out and fight. We have faced them before and know their capabilities,” she stated, adding that the team must elevate their performance and cooperate to counter the opposition effectively.
Rauluni mentioned that valuable lessons were learned from previous test matches against Scotland and the Netherlands as they continue to build momentum. “The last time we faced Samoa, costly mistakes led to our loss. We need to bring our A game to stay competitive,” he remarked.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 2 am and will be broadcast live on Sky Pacific.
