The Vodafone Fijiana XVs are set to extend their winning streak in the WXV3 as they face Samoa in Dubai on Sunday morning (Fiji time).
In a Zoom interview on Thursday night, head coach Mosese Rauluni emphasized the importance of treating their Pacific rivals with respect and preparing thoroughly for the match. “Samoa is a very good side,” he cautioned, noting their strong forward pack.
Rauluni expressed confidence in his team’s high morale and focus since the onset of the competition. He mentioned that with Samoa eager for a win after losing their opening match, the Fijiana XVs must be on guard.
To counter Samoa’s physical game, the Fijiana XVs will have six forwards and two backs on the bench. Rauluni stressed the need for aggressive play at the breakdown and adherence to their game plan.
While the team has faced some injuries, Rauluni sees this as an opportunity for other players to step up. He acknowledged the challenges of adapting to the heat but praised the team’s performance.
The Fijiana XVs have identified areas for improvement following their 38-3 victory against Hong Kong, China. First-five eight Jennifer Ravutia will team up with halfback Evivi Senikaviri to lead the attack against Samoa.
Captain Karalaini Naisewa anticipates a physical confrontation on game day. She expressed faith in her team’s ability to fight and counter Samoa’s capabilities based on previous encounters.
Rauluni reflected on lessons learned from past test matches against Scotland and the Netherlands, indicating steady progress. He mentioned that costly mistakes in their last encounter with Samoa led to a loss, emphasizing the need to elevate their performance to stay competitive.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 2 AM and will be broadcast live on Sky Pacific.
