The Vodafone Fijiana XV team delivered an impressive performance against Hong Kong China, winning 38-3 in their opening match of the WXV3 tournament. This victory sets them up for their next match against Samoa on October 12 in Dubai.
Head coach Mosese Rauluni acknowledged that the team started slowly, giving away too much possession and many penalties in the first half. He noted that although they improved in the second half, there were still minor mistakes that added pressure.
Rauluni expressed satisfaction with the win against Hong Kong China following prior losses to Scotland and the Netherlands, stating, “The win provided the players with confidence as they prepare for a challenging game against Samoa in two weeks.” He emphasized the need for solid set-pieces and improved physicality in their upcoming match.
Captain Karalaini Naisewa shared positive reflections on the team’s performance, highlighting the familiarity of Dubai’s weather compared to home. She noted the importance of addressing their errors and stated, “Samoa is not an easy game; we will aim to come out strong.” Naisewa also mentioned that the squad needs to enhance their fitness levels for the next match.
The match saw prop Anasimeci Korovata score the first try for Fiji, followed by tries from speedster Kolora Lomani and captain Naisewa. Hong Kong managed to get on the scoreboard with a penalty, but Fiji continued to dominate with tries from winger Repeka Tove and flanker Sulita Waisega. Naisewa capped off the scoring with her second try, leading to a final score of 38-3.
In another development, the national under-18 schoolboys team secured a 26-14 victory over Australia in their opening match at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka last Saturday. They are set to play their second match at 3 PM tomorrow.
