For the first time in the history of Fiji’s sports, a national team conducted its itatau ceremony without the presence of the President. This significant event took place at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, where the Fijiana 7s squad sought blessings from Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, as they prepare for their upcoming Dubai 7s campaign.
In the past, this ceremony was traditionally held at the State House, making this an unprecedented occasion. The Fijiana team’s itatau is only the second to be presented outside of the State House, following a similar event in 2018 when other Team Fiji athletics and sports teams presented their itatau at Boron House to former President Jioji Konrote.
Minister Saukuru encouraged the players, urging them to concentrate on the possibilities that the new season presents rather than fixating on previous performances. He expressed his belief in the team’s potential to make Fiji proud at the Dubai 7s, emphasizing that they carry the hopes and aspirations of the nation. “Remember that the people of Fiji stand firmly behind you,” he stated.
The Fijiana team is eager to represent their country proudly as they embark on their journey to Dubai, departing this Sunday. They will face off against China, Ireland, and Australia during the group stages.
This historic moment signifies a new chapter for Fijian sports, highlighting resilience and progress as the Fijiana 7s team prepares to make their mark on the international stage. The support and encouragement from their country can fuel the team’s determination to excel and achieve great things in Dubai.
In a broader perspective, this change in tradition reflects a growing adaptability within Fijian sports, paving the way for future teams to embrace new practices while maintaining their cultural significance. The anticipation surrounding their upcoming matches is a testament to the spirit and unity of Fijians, who rally behind their athletes.
