In a historic moment for Fiji’s sporting landscape, the Fijiana 7s team presented their itatau ceremony without the customary presence of the President. This significant event took place at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, where the squad sought blessings from the Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, in preparation for their upcoming campaign in the Dubai 7s tournament.
Traditionally, such ceremonies have been held at the State House, making this instance unique and marking only the second time an itatau was conducted outside its usual venue, with the first being at Boron House. Notably, in 2018, Team Fiji’s athletics and sports teams presented their itatau to former President Jioji Konrote at the same venue.
During the ceremony, Minister Saukuru inspired the players to concentrate on the fresh prospects of the new season and encouraged them to avoid fixation on past performances. He expressed his belief that the Fijiana 7s team would proudly represent Fiji and carry the expectations and ambitions of the nation’s people.
“You hold the hopes of our nation in your hands,” he stated, assuring the team that the citizens of Fiji would be firmly supporting them.
As the Fijiana squad prepares to leave the country this Sunday for Dubai, they are eager to make their mark in the upcoming tournament, where they will compete against China, Ireland, and Australia in the group stage.
This remarkable occasion is not only a testament to the evolving traditions of sporting events in Fiji but also demonstrates the resilience and spirit of unity felt within the Fijiana squad. Their upcoming challenge in Dubai is an opportunity for them to showcase their talent and determination on an international stage, potentially igniting a new era of achievement in Fijian sports.
