Interim head coach Timoci Volavola has introduced a fresh lineup for the Fijiana 7s team this season, following a challenging stint that culminated in a 12th place finish at the Paris Olympic Games in August. With only three experienced players, including Ana Maria Naimasi, Volavola is optimistic that this new squad can reignite support for women’s sevens rugby in Fiji.

Volavola, who previously served as the assistant national coach, noted that many players from last season have departed. He plans to finalize his 12-member roster on Thursday after all medical assessments have been completed. The coach expressed satisfaction with the new players, who he believes have shown significant improvement since their initial training camp.

“This is a tough start given our results from last year, but I am ready to face the challenge,” Volavola remarked. His primary goal is to rebuild support for the girls’ team and establish a focused mindset among the players. He emphasized that the new recruits are enthusiastic, eager to learn, and responsive to coaching.

Despite the recent setbacks, Volavola is determined to shift the team’s culture positively, focusing on discipline and teamwork, both on and off the field. “We are moving forward with new players for the greater good of Fijiana 7s,” he asserted, stating that those who do not adhere to team rules would be let go to maintain a healthy environment.

His immediate objective is to secure a place among the top eight in the core team. The upcoming competition marks the first major tournament for many of the new players, and Volavola is committed to pushing them to excel and remain within the core team.

Fijiana will find themselves in Pool A alongside formidable opponents including Australia, Ireland, and China. Volavola acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting the strong performances of these teams during the Olympics. He stressed the importance of recovery after a long journey, stating, “We will work very hard to achieve our goals.”

Interestingly, former sevens representative Emosi Mulevoro will support Volavola in this new endeavor, bringing valuable experience to the coaching staff.

Overall, there is a sense of renewal and determination within the Fijiana 7s camp, as they look to rise above past challenges and make a mark in the upcoming season.
