Neharika Gambhir has made history as the first Fijian analog astronaut in America, an achievement she describes as both an honor and a humbling experience. The 26-year-old recently captured the attention of social media, receiving a wave of congratulatory messages from fellow Fijians worldwide.

Neharika shared her journey with FijiLive, reflecting on how her fascination with aviation began at the age of five while being raised by her grandparents in Suva. She cherished gifts like binoculars and books about space, which fueled her aspirations.
In 2019, Neharika moved to the U.S. to be with her adoptive family, consisting of her aunt and uncle, who have been pivotal in her life. Her educational pursuits include earning a Bachelor’s in Computer Science, which she is set to complete next year, as she works towards becoming an analog astronaut. This role engages individuals in training and simulations that mimic the conditions of space travel.
Alongside her studies, Neharika works as a cybersecurity engineer, a position that required her to complete a demanding boot camp and earn certifications. She is also in pilot training, which is key in preparing for the physical demands of space travel.
Neharika takes pride in representing Fiji and seeks to inspire the next generation, particularly Pacific Islanders, to pursue careers in STEM. She acknowledges the challenges she faces in a male-dominated field, noting the lack of representation among pilots and astronauts. However, she draws great strength from the women in her family, who have overcome their own adversities.
