Fijian Teen Shines as ASB President: Inspiring Leadership in the U.S.

Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old from Namata Village in Tailevu, is making strides as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Washington, U.S. With her family links to Nasavu Village in Deuba, Deborah’s leadership reflects her Fijian heritage and brings pride to her family, who reside in Fiji.

Under the guidance of her aunt and uncle, Selenia and Aseri Kunawave, Deborah has been attending Everett High School since 2021, serving a student body of 1,606 from Grade 9 to 12. She shared that her peers and teachers inspired her to run for ASB president. After a successful election on February 29, where she garnered a significant majority of votes, she felt a sense of responsibility and joy, crediting her success to a higher plan.

Describing herself as a proud daughter of Tailevu despite being born in the U.S., Deborah’s achievements extend beyond academics. Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, describes her as a cheerful and loving individual who actively promotes unity and kindness among her peers. Notably, Deborah has also showcased her singing talent, performing the American National Anthem at various events, including volleyball and baseball games.

Recently, Deborah participated in a leadership camp organized by the school district at Mt Adams, where approximately 500 students engaged in activities aimed at enhancing their leadership skills without the distraction of technology. She found the experience transformative, emphasizing the importance of creating meaningful connections and embracing life’s challenges.

In recognition of her impactful contributions, Deborah was honored as one of the Rotary Club of Everett’s Students of the Month for October. Her peers and teachers commend her for leading with kindness and positivity, noting that her presence inspires those around her.

Deborah encourages young people to seek support from those who uplift them and to remain grounded in their faith, highlighting the importance of prayer and gratitude in navigating life’s challenges.
