Fijian Teen Shines as ASB President: A Leadership Journey to Inspire

Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old student and leader, is dedicated to positively influencing her school and community. Originally from Namata Village in Tailevu and connected to Nasavu Village in Deuba, she serves as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Everett, Washington.

As the leader of a student body consisting of 1,606 students from grades 9 to 12, Deborah is a source of pride for her family, who reside in Fiji. She is currently living with her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave in the U.S. Deborah expressed that her decision to run for ASB president was motivated by encouragement from fellow students and teachers. She realized her influence after receiving the news of her victory on February 29, noting that winning with the highest number of votes filled her with both joy and nerves, but also a sense of purpose in her life.

Despite being born in the U.S., Deborah proudly embraces her Fijian heritage. She was elected ASB president last month on September 4, after joining the school in Year 9 in 2021.

In Fiji, her mother Ana Gasaucalayawa described Deborah as a cheerful and loving child, known for her peacemaking qualities. Deborah, a talented singer, has performed the American National Anthem at various events, including school sports games.

In her capacity as ASB president, Deborah and her team recently attended a leadership camp organized by their school district in Mt Adams, which involved nearly 500 students. Deborah described the experience as transformative, crediting the camp for teaching her how to embrace challenges and lead effectively.

On October 15, she was recognized as one of three Rotary Club of Everett Students of the Month for October. The Rotary Club celebrates outstanding high school students in Everett for their achievements and potential. One of her teachers praised her leadership style, stating that she leads with kindness and positivity.

When asked for advice for young people, Deborah emphasized the importance of seeking support from positive influences and the value of prayer in bringing joy into daily life.
