Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old dedicated leader, is making waves in her school and community. Hailing from Namata Village in Tailevu, she has strong family ties to Nasavu Village in Deuba and currently serves as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Everett, Washington.

At Everett High, which has a student population of 1,606 from grades 9 to 12, Deborah’s role as a Fijian student leader is a source of pride for her family back home in Fiji. While her parents remain in Fiji, she resides in the U.S. under the care of her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave.

Deborah shared that her decision to run for ASB president was motivated by encouragement from fellow students and teachers. “Before I ran for the position, I had no idea of the impact I had on this school,” she mentioned, recalling the day she learned of her victory on February 29. “Winning with the highest number of votes brought me immense joy and nervousness. It made me realize that the Lord has a plan for me in this life.”

Born in the U.S., Deborah takes pride in her Fijian heritage, identifying herself as a proud daughter of Tailevu. She was elected ASB president on September 4 after attending Everett High since Year 9 in 2021.

Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, described her daughter as a cheerful and confident individual. “Deborah has always been a loving and cheerful girl. She doesn’t like to see any child sad or crying,” she said. “She was known as a peacemaker in her school and encouraged unity among her peers. Deborah is also talented and a beautiful singer, having performed the American National Anthem multiple times at school events.”

As part of her leadership duties, Deborah recently attended a leadership camp organized by the school district in Mt. Adams, where students disconnected from technology for the event. She found the experience transformative, stating, “The first day I was terrified of meeting new people, but the next six days turned out to be the best of my life.”

In addition to her ASB role, Deborah was honored as one of the Rotary Club of Everett’s Student of the Month for October. The Rotary Club recognizes exceptional high school students each month for their achievements and potential. One of her teachers praised her, saying, “Deborah leads with love. She is kind, accepting, and positive. Her presence encourages others.”

Deborah’s ASB advisor noted that she is unique among ASB Presidents, as her peers often break into applause and cheers when she is introduced.

When asked what advice she would offer to young people, Deborah said, “Know that there are people around you who will support you and others who may bring you down. Lean on your supporters during tough times and pray for joy each day. You’ll notice a difference, and others will, too.”
