Fijian Star Vuate Karawalevu Set to Boost Drua’s Backline?

Flying Fijians fullback Vuate Karawalevu’s impressive defensive skills and precise kicking in their recent match against Samoa have caught the attention of many. Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson has hinted at the possibility of Karawalevu joining the team next season. The 23-year-old, who previously captained Marist Brothers High School in rugby and won a gold medal in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, is expected to enhance the Drua’s backline.

Karawalevu played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and represented Fiji Bati at the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He currently has a two-season contract with the Waratahs. Jackson noted that 14 Drua players participated in the Flying Fijians’ convincing 42-16 victory over Samoa in their opening Pacific Nations Cup match at HFC Bank Stadium, Suva.

Furthermore, Jackson announced that the Drua will hold a pre-season camp in Kadavu, with plans for renovations at their training base to create a better environment for developing elite players. The return of Joseva Tamani, who can play both back row and lock, is also seen as a positive development for the club.

Recent additions to the Drua include Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou. Jackson praised Ravai for his extensive experience and mentorship abilities in the front row. The new center combination features Iosefo Masi teaming up with the former Racing 92 player Tabuavou, who made a strong impression during his second test against Samoa.

Additionally, Baden Stephenson, the new interim general manager of the Fijian Drua, announced plans for a 10s tournament scheduled for December 13, aiming to make it an international event featuring Skipper teams as well.
