Iliesa Toga, a retired soldier and security guard, has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support he received from Fijians across the globe after a car accident incident went viral. On October 18, Mr. Toga accidentally collided with a car driven by 20-year-old Bhavik Verma in Narere, Nasinu. The incident was captured on video, showing Mr. Toga apologizing and offering to cover damages.
Unbeknownst to him, Mr. Toga’s sincere apology resonated with many viewers, leading to a surge of empathy. Donations poured in, and as of November 12, he had received over $3,300 via M-Paisa from generous supporters worldwide. Mr. Toga expressed his gratitude in the local vernacular, emphasizing the unity and love among Fijians, even in challenging times.
However, the situation took an unfortunate turn as threats against Mr. Verma’s family surfaced on social media following the video’s circulation. Mr. Toga, advocating for peace, urged everyone to forgive the involved parties, stating that violence is not a solution. He has since filed a police report but has not received a response.
Sanjay Verma, Bhavik’s father, shared concerns about safety and requested increased police presence around their home due to the threats. Despite the negative developments, support for Mr. Toga continues to arrive in various forms, including financial donations and offers of assistance from locals, such as free garage services from mechanic Deo Kumar.
While contemplating legal action against Mr. Verma for defamation, Mr. Toga has temporarily halted his plans to pay the remaining $100 he promised for the damages. Despite these challenges, he is grateful for the kindness exhibited by his fellow Fijians. Meanwhile, the Land Transport Authority stresses the importance of road safety with its ongoing “Drive Safe, Celebrate Responsibly” campaign, particularly during the festive season.
In summary, this heartwarming story highlights the power of community support amidst adversity, showing that compassion can indeed transcend obstacles. It serves as a reminder of the strength found in unity and the importance of taking a stand against violence, promoting a message of forgiveness and peace.
