Iliesa Toga, a retired soldier and security guard, has expressed heartfelt gratitude after receiving overwhelming support from Fijians around the world following a car accident that gained considerable attention online. The touching video of Mr. Toga’s sincere apology went viral, resonating deeply with viewers.
On October 18, at approximately 7:55 PM, Mr. Toga, from Barotu in Ra, was involved in an incident with a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Bhavik Verma in Narere, Nasinu. Unaware he was being filmed, Mr. Toga can be seen in the footage earnestly apologizing and offering to cover the damages. During their conversations, Mr. Verma requested $500 for repairs, while Mr. Toga evaluated the damage as minimal and offered $200 instead. He initiated an initial payment of $100, with plans for the remaining amount to follow the next day.
The video sparked widespread compassion, leading to an outpouring of financial and moral support for Mr. Toga. As of November 12, he had received over $3,347.38 through M-Paisa transfers from Fijians residing in various countries, a testament to the community’s generosity. Mr. Toga conveyed his gratitude in Fijian, expressing that the support demonstrates the power of love in overcoming difficulties.
However, the incident also gave rise to concerning threats directed at Mr. Verma’s family, which emerged on social media after the video’s circulation. Mr. Toga has called for forgiveness, stating that violence is not a solution. He has lodged a police report at the Samabula Police Station, but details regarding an official response remain unclear, and inquiries directed to the police have been unanswered.
Furthermore, Mr. Verma, who posted the video on the Fijian Memes Hub, explained that his intention was merely to identify Mr. Toga, but the situation escalated unexpectedly. He noted challenges in reaching Mr. Toga since the incident. Mr. Verma’s father, Sanjay, has indicated concerns for their family’s safety and requested increased police patrols around their home due to the threats received.
In addition to financial aid, moral support has poured in for Mr. Toga. Dinesh Lal, a supporter who donated $202, remarked on the emotional impact of the video, stressing that no one deserves such humiliation. Mechanic Deo Kumar also offered free garage services, echoing the sentiment that no one should be subjected to such treatment.
Now contemplating legal action against Mr. Verma for defamation, Mr. Toga has temporarily halted his plans to complete the final payment until the situation is resolved. Despite the challenges, Mr. Toga remains overwhelmed by the compassion displayed by his fellow Fijians. The Land Transport Authority’s media liaison, Geraldine Panapasa, highlighted the ongoing “Drive Safe, Celebrate Responsibly” campaign aimed at promoting responsible driving during the festive season.
This situation serves as a reminder of the strength of community support in times of adversity, showcasing the kindness and unity that can emerge even from difficult circumstances.
