On October 18 at around 7:55 PM, Mr. Toga, from Barotu, Saivou in Ra, reportedly collided with the vehicle of Bhavik Verma in Narere, Nasinu. The incident was recorded by Mr. Verma, who is in his early 20s. In the footage, Mr. Toga is seen sincerely apologizing and expressing his willingness to cover the damages, unaware that he was being filmed.
During the exchange, Mr. Verma suggested a payment of $500, while Mr. Toga offered $200, believing the damage was minor. Mr. Toga initially paid $100 and intended to pay the remaining $100 the following day. The video quickly sparked significant empathy, leading to a flood of support for Mr. Toga.
As of November 12, Mr. Toga had received $3,347.38 in donations through M-Paisa from generous Fijians globally. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude in Fijian, thanking supporters from countries like the UK, US, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe, affirming that this kindness exemplifies the power of love in overcoming obstacles.
Unfortunately, the situation has not been without challenges. There have been reports of threats made against Mr. Verma’s family on social media following the video’s viral spread. Mr. Toga has issued a plea for forgiveness, emphasizing that violence is not a solution. He has filed a report with the Samabula Police Station, seeking assistance, but has yet to receive an official response.
Mr. Verma clarified his intentions regarding the video, stating it was solely meant to identify Mr. Toga and regretting that the situation escalated. He noted that all efforts to reach Mr. Toga have been unanswered. Simultaneously, Mr. Verma’s father has raised concerns over their safety, requesting additional police patrols near their home due to the threats.
