Iliesa Toga, a retired soldier and security guard, has expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received from Fijians around the globe after being involved in a car accident that garnered significant attention online. A video capturing Mr. Toga’s sincere apology and willingness to pay for the damages went viral, resonating deeply with viewers.

On October 18, around 7:55 PM, Mr. Toga, hailing from Barotu in Saivou, Ra, was involved in a minor collision with Bhavik Verma’s car in Narere, Nasinu. In the video taken by Verma, who is in his early 20s, Mr. Toga can be seen humbly apologizing for the accident and offering to settle the damages. Unaware that he was being filmed, Mr. Toga expressed his intention to pay, proposing an initial payment of $100, followed by another $100 the next day, after Verma initially requested $500.

The footage inspired a wave of empathy, leading to Mr. Toga receiving over $3,340 in contributions via M-Paisa from generous Fijians worldwide by November 12. “Au vakavinavinaka saka,” Mr. Toga stated in Fijian, conveying his heartfelt thanks to supporters from various countries, emphasizing that their solidarity proves love overcomes challenges.

Despite the outpouring of kindness, Mr. Toga faced difficulties, including reports of threats made against Verma’s family on social media following the video’s release. In response, Mr. Toga urged forgiveness, asserting that violence is not the answer. He has also filed a police report amid rising tensions and concerns from Verma’s father about safety at their home.

While Mr. Verma explained that he only meant to identify Mr. Toga when sharing the video, he noted that situations escalated beyond his control and that his attempts to reach out to Mr. Toga received no response. Meanwhile, supporters continue to offer both financial assistance and moral support, with individuals like Dinesh Lal donating money and mechanic Deo Kumar providing free services, emphasizing that no one should endure humiliation.

Considering possible legal action against Mr. Verma for defamation, Mr. Toga has momentarily delayed his promised payment to resolve any outstanding issues. Through this ordeal, Mr. Toga is profoundly appreciative of the kindness shown by the community, while the Land Transport Authority underscores the importance of road safety during the festive season through its “Drive Safe, Celebrate Responsibly” campaign.

This incident not only highlights the compassion and unity within the Fijian community but also serves as a reminder of the importance of handling disputes amicably and responsibly. Mr. Toga’s story demonstrates that even in challenging times, collective support and understanding can pave the way for healing and resolution.
