Vasemaca Garnett, a member of the Fijian military, has been honored with the General Service Medal for his service in Iraq two months ago. This medal, which recognizes a soldier’s commitment and contribution during their deployment, is awarded to military personnel from Fiji for their service within the region, including the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).
Vasemaca is part of a contingent of 135 Fijian soldiers currently serving in Iraq. He hails from the Rewa region and expressed gratitude for receiving the medal, stating that he felt proud and humbled by the recognition of his efforts.
Despite the distance from Fiji, Vasemaca highlighted the strong support he receives from his family, which provides comfort amid the challenges of working far from home. He noted the emotional toll such deployments can take but remained optimistic, emphasizing that the sacrifices made are driven by a commitment to their mission.
Alongside Vasemaca, 20 other women serving in Iraq also received the same medal, showcasing the important role of female soldiers in the mission. Vasemaca encourages young women to persevere through difficulties and to remain dedicated to their work, illustrating the resilience and strength found in the armed forces.
This recognition underscores the dedication of Fijian soldiers serving abroad, reminding us of their tireless efforts in promoting peace and stability in conflict-affected regions. Not only does it reflect their bravery, but it also demonstrates the support of their families and communities back home.
In summary, Vasemaca Garnett’s award of the General Service Medal and the support from fellow soldiers and families highlight the sacrifices made by military personnel serving in challenging environments.
