Vasemaca Garnett has been honored with the General Service Medal for his service in Iraq, reflecting both bravery and commitment. The medal is traditionally awarded to Fijian military personnel to recognize their dedication during missions within the United Nations and other peacekeeping efforts.

Vasemaca is among 135 members of the Fijian military who have served in Iraq over the past year. Hailing from the Rewa region, he expressed that he had not anticipated receiving the medal, attributing his success to his willpower and resilience.

Despite being situated far from home, Vasemaca feels well-supported by his family, who remain resilient during his time away. His military involvement represents a significant commitment towards peacekeeping and setting a positive example for women in service.

Yet, Vasemaca acknowledges the challenges faced by servicemen and women, highlighting the need for mental strength and physical readiness while coping with the distance from their loved ones. He noted the sacrifices made, including the emotional toll separation can bring, but remains optimistic, advising young women to persist and work hard amid difficulties.

In total, 20 women serving alongside Vasemaca in Iraq also received the General Service Medal, celebrating the important role that women play in military operations.

This recognition serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families, and offers encouragement to future generations of service members, particularly women, to face their challenges head-on with resilience and courage.
