The Fijian Drua is pleased to announce that two academy players, Seremaia Salikoro and Sefanaia Naqama, have been awarded scholarships to attend the esteemed Tauranga Boys College in New Zealand. This opportunity has been made possible through a strategic partnership between the Drua and the college.
Salikoro, who hails from Natabua High School, has secured a three-year scholarship, while Naqama, a student at Sila Central High School in Nausori, will benefit from a two-year scholarship. The talented duo was recognized by Regan Ward, the First XV coach at Tauranga Boys College, along with Aidan Kuka, the Senior Rugby coordinator. After spending a week observing the Drua’s academy players, they pinpointed Salikoro and Naqama as ideal candidates for this scholarship program.
Baden Stephenson, general manager of the Fijian Drua, expressed excitement about this partnership, stating that it represents a significant milestone for both players. He mentioned, “The partnership will be a life-changing experience for our first two scholarship holders. Salikoro and Naqama, both 16 years old, will not only receive an excellent education but will also immerse themselves in a different culture within an elite rugby environment.” Stephenson assured that both players would return to the Drua after completing their scholarships, emphasizing the commitment to nurturing their development both on and off the field.
The Drua aims to maintain a strong connection with Salikoro and Naqama throughout their journey in New Zealand, aligning shared values and dedication to personal growth. As members of the Fijian Drua Academy, Salikoro and Naqama are expected to arrive in New Zealand before the start of the upcoming academic year.
Aidan Kuka expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the school’s mission to support young boys in becoming exceptional men. With its rich history and ethos of excellence, Tauranga Boys College is eager to welcome Seremaia and Sefanaia in 2025, providing them with an unparalleled opportunity for both education and rugby development.
This partnership not only represents a significant step in the careers of these young players but also showcases the positive impact of international sports collaborations on youth development. It’s a hopeful reminder of how such opportunities can change lives and foster personal growth through disciplined athleticism and education.
