Fijian Rugby Star Makes NFL History: A New Path for Young Athletes

Former Fiji Under-20 rugby representative Jeneiro Wakeham is making headlines as the first Fijian to participate in the International Player Pathway Program Class of 2025 under the National Football League (NFL) in the United States. Currently in his seventh week with the program, Wakeham expressed hope that more young Fijian athletes will follow in his footsteps.

Despite missing the sport of rugby, which holds a significant place in Fijian culture, Wakeham did not hesitate to embrace this new opportunity within American football. He shared, “It was not a hard decision to take up this opportunity; the only bit I found hard was leaving Rugby because you know Rugby back home is a big thing for us I-taukeis.”

The Savusavu native is among 13 athletes representing 12 different nations as they navigate their journey in the NFL. Wakeham’s love for rugby began at the tender age of seven, and he faced tough competition by playing against adults when he was just 15. His rugby career saw him through the Stade Francais academy in France and later with Ealing Trailfinders in London.

Even with limited exposure to American football, apart from watching a few Super Bowls and social media highlights, Wakeham draws inspiration from Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, a prominent figure who successfully transitioned through the same pathway program.

This story is a testament to the opportunities available for young Fijian talents, showcasing how they can expand their horizons beyond traditional sports and pursue dreams on a global scale. Jeneiro Wakeham’s journey is inspiring and represents hope for future athletes from Fiji as they aim to carve out their paths in various sports disciplines.

Comment: The transition from rugby to American football highlights the adaptability and potential of athletes like Wakeham, emphasizing the importance of seizing opportunities and exploring new avenues in sports. Such moves can pave the way for others to follow, demonstrating that perseverance and willingness to embrace change can lead to success.
