Fijian Rugby Star-Bound: Motikiai Murray’s Path to Redemption and Glory

Former Ratu Kadavulevu School student and Fijian Drua open-side flanker Motikiai Murray is looking forward to an exciting season ahead. The 21-year-old from Lovoni, Ovalau, Lomaiviti, is progressing well with his light training after undergoing ankle surgery in Sydney, Australia, a few months ago. He has maternal roots in Nukuni-i-cake, Ono I Lau.

Murray stated, “I’m just focusing on my rehab and have been preparing well for the upcoming season.” Although he hasn’t started running yet, he is hopeful to participate in field sessions soon.

He made his debut for the Drua during a Super Rugby Pacific quarterfinal match against the Crusaders in June of last year. With support from senior team members, Murray is eager to learn from them and is aiming to represent the Flying Fijians in the near future.

Growing up, he was motivated by Flying Fijian flanker Levani Botia, admiring his strength in defense and breakdown play. “Botia is strong in both defense and breakdown; I loved watching him and hope to be that player one day,” Murray expressed.

He enjoys playing alongside seasoned players, having previously watched them compete in rugby league, sevens, and for the Flying Fijians. “Playing alongside them has been exciting, and my main focus is to stay fit and give my best during the season,” he added.

Murray also mentioned his eagerness to wear the national jersey when the opportunity arises, and he is open to playing at number 8 if needed. Over the last two seasons, he has played six matches for the Drua.
