Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka paid tribute to his former national rugby teammate, Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese, who has passed away. Rabuka expressed sorrow over the loss of a celebrated figure in Fijian rugby history.

Reflecting on their time together, Rabuka recounted playing alongside Tuisese as a prop during the national team’s tour of England and Wales in 1970, which marked the centennial celebrations of the English Rugby Football Union. He vividly remembered a significant moment on October 10, 1970, when the team prepared to compete against the British Combined Services.

As they were getting ready, the band began playing what they initially believed to be the Fijian national anthem. Rabuka recalled how the players were distracted until Officer Cadet Alex Eastgate and Ratu Josua Rabukawaqa stood at attention, prompting him to urge his teammates to do the same.

He shared his initial confusion over the flag being raised, mistakenly thinking it belonged to the Royal Air Force due to its colors, only to realize it was the new Fijian flag being hoisted for the first time, accompanied by their anthem in that historic moment.

Rabuka noted that the referee for that match was Air Commodore Lamb, who had recently undertaken a secret mission during the Cold War, adding to the day’s significance. He praised Tuisese for his strength both on and off the field, describing him as a leader and a steadfast friend.

The Prime Minister highlighted Tuisese’s immense talent and dedication to rugby, which earned him admiration from peers. Rabuka reflected on their shared victories, particularly against Oxford University, which he would always remember fondly.

He emphasized that Tuisese’s impact transcended the realm of rugby, acknowledging the profound influence he had on the sport and the future of Fijian rugby. Rabuka concluded his tribute by expressing that Tuisese’s memory would be cherished by all who knew him and within the annals of Fijian rugby history, leaving a lasting legacy.
