Fijian Rugby Legend Remembered: A Heartfelt Tribute to Ilaitia Tuisese

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka paid a touching tribute to his former national rugby team-mate, Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese, who has passed away.

“Today, we grieve the loss of a beloved Fijian rugby figure, Ilaitia Tuisese,” Rabuka remarked. He reflected on the honor of playing alongside Tuisese as a prop forward during the national team’s tour of England and Wales in 1970, which celebrated the centenary of the English Rugby Football Union.

Rabuka recalled the significance of October 10, 1970, when they were preparing to take on the British Combined Services. As the band started playing what they initially believed was their national anthem, “Meda dau doka…,” he remembered feeling an overwhelming sense of pride. It was a momentous occasion as it marked the first time they heard their anthem while witnessing the raising of the new Fijian flag.

He noted that, at first, many players were preoccupied with their gear until they noticed two officers standing at attention. “I encouraged my teammates to stand tall and honor the flag,” he said. Rabuka initially mistook the flag’s colors for those of the Royal Air Force but soon realized the significance of the moment when the new Fijian flag was raised.

He also reminisced about the referee for that match, Air Commodore Lamb, who had recently participated in a Cold War operation. Rabuka described it as an unforgettable experience that created lasting memories.

“Ilaitia performed with strength that day, as he did in every game. He was more than a teammate; he was a leader, a powerhouse on the field, and a true friend off the pitch. His remarkable talent and dedication to the sport earned him the admiration of all who played alongside him. We enjoyed many victories, including a significant win against Oxford University, and those moments will be cherished forever,” he expressed.

Rabuka emphasized that Tuisese’s legacy goes beyond rugby. His impact on the sport and his influence on the future of Fijian rugby will always be remembered. “Today, we celebrate not just a legend, but a man who will be sorely missed,” Rabuka stated.

“Rest in peace, Ilaitia Tuisese. Your legacy will endure in the hearts of everyone who knew you and in the chronicles of Fijian rugby.”
