Fijian Opposition MP Responds to Controversial Pardon Decision

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has reported receiving numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who are grieving and disappointed following the recent announcement by the Mercy Commission regarding a pardon for George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.

In a statement, Lal expressed that this decision has reopened historical wounds for many who faced significant losses, whether it involved family, livelihoods, or the necessity to flee the country during those troubled times.

Lal emphasized that the memories of the events from 2000 remain vivid for numerous individuals, and he stands in solidarity with those affected, acknowledging the deep repercussions these events have had on their lives and the nation overall.

“As your representative, I must be candid—while I understand and share your concerns, we are currently facing a reality I cannot change. Unfortunately, I do not possess the authority to overturn or contest this decision. Please know that I empathize with your suffering, and although I cannot alter the past, I will strive to voice your concerns to the best of my ability as we continue to push for transparency and accountability from the coalition for all Fijians,” Lal stated.
