Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed that he has received numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who are grieving and disappointed by the recent decision by the Mercy Commission to pardon George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.
In a statement, Lal noted that this decision has reopened wounds for those who suffered immense losses during that time, including the loss of family, livelihoods, and the necessity to flee Fiji for safety during those turbulent days.
He acknowledged that the trauma from the events of 2000 remains vivid for many, and he stands in solidarity with those affected, recognizing the significant impact these events have had on their lives and on the nation as a whole.
“As your representative, I must be transparent—while I understand and share your concerns, we must face the reality of the situation, and I do not possess the authority to overturn or contest this decision. Please know that I empathize deeply with your suffering, and while I cannot alter the past, I will continue to advocate for your voices as we strive for transparency and accountability from the coalition for every Fijian,” Lal stated.
