A mother of three from Lautoka made history by becoming the first Fijian to successfully undergo heart surgery at Fiji’s only locally-owned private hospital. Kusum Lata, 56, from Natabua, expressed immense gratitude to the heart surgery team led by Parvish Kumar, the founder and CEO of Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH), along with their dedicated doctors and nursing staff.
Before her surgery, Mrs. Lata faced significant financial obstacles, as she had experienced a heart attack earlier in June and was advised that the necessary bypass operation could only be done in India at a cost of approximately $23,000, including airfare and other expenses. This prohibitive amount left her in despair until she learned that PSH was starting to offer heart surgeries locally.
Overjoyed by the opportunity, Mrs. Lata stated, “I was so happy. Never dreamt this could be done here, and my family is very happy to see me well and also be with me during my recovery.” Her surgery at PSH cost significantly less—under a quarter of what she would have had to pay in India. Remarkably, she was able to be surrounded by her family during her recovery, a comfort that would not have been possible had she gone abroad.
Mrs. Lata’s message to fellow Fijians is clear: they should save their money and consider the affordable options available at PSH, emphasizing that they offer quality care without the financial burden associated with overseas medical procedures. She is already feeling much better following her surgery and hopes her story encourages others facing similar health concerns.
This inspiring story highlights the importance of local healthcare innovations and the growing capabilities of Fiji’s medical infrastructure, providing hope for more residents seeking affordable health care solutions within their country.
