Three influential Fijian social media personalities are set to represent their homeland at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Odisha, India. The High Commission of India in Suva organized a pre-departure briefing for the selected attendees: Shania Singh, Shaheel Shermont Flair, and Ashwani Vasist Deo.
Shania Singh, a former television star and a well-known content creator, joins Shermont, who has garnered a significant following on TikTok, with several Bollywood celebrities sharing his engaging videos. Ashwani is also gaining traction on TikTok, with his content being widely circulated.
The influencers are excited to immerse themselves in India’s rich culture, heritage, and breathtaking landscapes while attending the convention from January 8-10 in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), celebrated annually on January 9 since 2003, honors the contributions of the Overseas Indian community to India’s growth.
January 9 was historically significant as it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa in 1915, a pivotal moment that inspired the Indian freedom struggle and transformed the lives of many. Since 2015, the event has been restructured to occur biennially, with theme-based conferences in between that engage overseas diaspora experts, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
These conventions serve as an invaluable platform for the Indian diaspora to connect with their roots and participate in mutually beneficial activities with the Indian government and community. They also foster networking opportunities among members of the overseas Indian community, allowing for the sharing of diverse experiences and expertise.
This event not only symbolizes a bridge between India and the diaspora but also highlights the tremendous potential of cultural exchange and collaboration in building a brighter future.
