Ravinder Dhesi, the general manager of JW Marriott Gold Coast and a native of Fiji, is commemorating 25 years of service with Marriott International this month. Dhesi began his hospitality career in 1999 in the finance department at the ITT Sheraton Resort in Denarau, Fiji. Over the years, he has worked at various Marriott locations including Noosa, Gold Coast, and Denarau, before returning to the Gold Coast.

Reflecting on his career, Dhesi highlights significant achievements such as the complete renovation, rebranding, and launch of the first JW Marriott brand in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific region. In 2022, he received numerous accolades, including the Global JW Marriott brand General Manager of the Year and Marriott International APEC Luxury General Manager of the Year.

Dhesi attributes his success to a strong work ethic, the guidance of mentors, and the unwavering support of his family and friends. He emphasizes the importance of having role models within the industry, stating, “It’s important to have mentors and industry stalwarts to look up to. Sometimes globally successful leaders may seem too far-fetched, but local leaders in the Fijian tourism industry have been my inspiration.”

He cites figures such as Radike Qereqeretabua and Tony Whitton as influential leaders who have shaped his perspective on success. He has also followed the achievements of Andre Viljoen and his team at Fiji Airways, which motivates him to strive for similar success.

Dhesi believes in the necessity of having a clear vision and personal career plan that inspires individual growth. He describes resilience, persistence, and seizing opportunities as key drivers of his career. He reflects on the words of Mr. Marriott, the chairman emeritus of Marriott International, suggesting that “success is never final,” and stresses the importance of continual improvement.

Expressing gratitude for the support from his family, especially his parents, wife, and children, Dhesi encourages others to surround themselves with supportive individuals who can help them pursue their career goals. He hopes that his journey in the hospitality industry will inspire fellow Fijians.

As tourism plays a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, Dhesi envisions integrating exceptional service with the natural warmth of the Fijian people to contribute to the $1 billion growth target highlighted by Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill.
