Fijian Drua Welcomes Rising Star Maleli Nauvasi to Development Program

The Fijian Drua has welcomed Maleli Nauvasi, a standout player from the Vodafone Deans competition, into the club’s Development program. The talented centre from Queen Victoria School played a pivotal role in his team’s success, helping secure the premier (U-18) title in 2024 and earning the player of the match award in the final against Nasinu Secondary School.

Nauvasi’s addition to the program reflects the Fijian Drua’s renewed commitment to identifying and nurturing local talent earlier, providing pathways that could lead to professional contracts within the Super Rugby Pacific squad. Originating from Dratabu in Nadi, Nauvasi also represented the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team last week, contributing significantly with a try and an assist in their two victories against the Australian Schoolboys U18.

Throughout his Deans competition journey, Nauvasi showcased his versatility by playing in various positions including flyhalf, wing, and fullback. Expressing his enthusiasm, Nauvasi said, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.”

Fijian Drua Development and Skills Coach Ifereimi Rawaqa expressed his excitement in welcoming Nauvasi, praising his exceptional talent and discipline on the field. He noted Nauvasi’s standout performances and expressed confidence that, with the right guidance, he has the potential to make a notable impact in the future. Rawaqa emphasized the program’s intent to support Nauvasi’s growth and development in rugby.

The Development program aims to equip young athletes like Nauvasi with essential resources, coaching, and a high-performance environment to aid their transition to professional rugby. Nauvasi joins a cohort of ten other young players within the Drua Development squad, all of whom will receive a salary and train alongside the Super Rugby Pacific squad several days a week. Additionally, these development players participate in the Skipper Cup, which runs concurrently with the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.
