The Fijian Drua has officially welcomed Vodafone Deans star Maleli Nauvasi into the club’s Development program. Nauvasi, who played a key role in helping Queen Victoria School secure the premier (U-18) title in the Deans competition in 2024, was recognized as the player of the match in the final against Nasinu Secondary School.
His recruitment aligns with the Drua’s renewed commitment to identifying and nurturing exceptional local talent early on, guiding them towards potential professional contracts with the Super Rugby Pacific squad. Originating from Dratabu in Nadi, Nauvasi was also a member of the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team that achieved success against the Australia Schoolboys U18 last week, where he contributed a try and an assist.
Having represented QVS in the Deans competition from U14 through U18, Nauvasi has experience playing in various positions, including flyhalf, wing, and fullback. Expressing his enthusiasm, Nauvasi stated, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.”
Ifereimi Rawaqa, the Fijian Drua Development and Skills Coach, expressed his satisfaction with Nauvasi’s addition to the program, highlighting his exceptional talent and on-field discipline. Rawaqa noted, “Nauvasi has proven himself as a standout performer in the Deans and also in the Fiji Schoolboys U18.” He added that with the right mentorship, Nauvasi has the potential to significantly impact the rugby scene in the coming years.
The Development program aims to equip young athletes like Nauvasi with the essential resources, coaching, and high-performance environment necessary for a successful transition to professional rugby. Nauvasi will join ten other promising players in the Drua Development squad, which includes a development contract that provides a salary and training opportunities with the Super Rugby Pacific squad most days of the week. The development players will also have opportunities to compete for provincial sides in the Skipper Cup, which coincides with the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season.
