The Fijian Drua has officially inaugurated its Academy, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to nurturing young rugby talent. This inaugural cohort comprises 29 players under the age of 16, who have signed on to participate in a specialized training program.

The Drua Academy is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at identifying and developing young athletes from across Fiji. The players were recruited through the secondary schools’ rugby competition and will engage in regular training camps at the Drua’s state-of-the-art facilities in Nadi throughout the year.

Among the schools represented, Marist Brothers High School showcased the highest participation with six players, followed closely by Suva Grammar School, which had four players selected. The Vodafone Deans Secondary Schools champion, Queen Victoria School, has also contributed to the Academy, with two of their students included in the program.

Mark Evans, CEO of the Fijian Drua, emphasized the Academy’s purpose, stating, “The Drua Academy is designed to identify, select, and help develop a pool of players nationwide, starting this year with the Under 16 category, to provide a sustainable pathway to professional rugby.” This vision for a robust developmental structure highlights the commitment to fostering talent and ensuring the longevity of rugby in Fiji.

Ben Takubu, the lead of the Drua Academy program, elaborated on the recruitment process, mentioning a comprehensive screening conducted by Drua Scouts, involving various coaching personnel. The players will embark on a rigorous two-day training camp where they will receive individualized coaching aimed at refining their skills and preparing them for the demands of elite-level rugby. “Through dedicated coaching and a specialized training program, we aim to help players harness their innate abilities,” Takubu noted.

Furthermore, this initiative offers a pathway for the finest players to progress into the Drua Development program, positioning them closer to joining the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Super Rugby Pacific squad.

The future looks promising for these emerging talents as they embark on this journey with the Drua Academy. By investing in the next generation of players, the Fijian Drua not only strengthens its roster but also plays an essential role in the growth and sustainability of rugby in the region. The program symbolizes hope and opportunity, showcasing a commitment to excellence in sports development that could inspire other organizations to follow suit.
