Fijian Drua Signs Rising Star Maleli Nauvasi in Exciting Development Program

The Fijian Drua has welcomed Vodafone Deans star Maleli Nauvasi into its Development program. The Queen Victoria School center excelled in the Deans competition, where he played a key role in his school’s triumph in the premier (U-18) title in 2024.

Nauvasi was recognized as the player of the match during the final against Nasinu Secondary School. His signing reflects the Fijian Drua’s renewed effort to identify exceptional local talent early and create pathways that could lead to a professional contract with the Super Rugby Pacific squad.

Hailing from Dratabu in Nadi, Nauvasi was also part of the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team that achieved two victories over the Australian Schoolboys U18 last week, contributing with a try and an assist.

He has represented QVS in the Deans competition from U14 to U18 levels, playing various positions including flyhalf, wing, and fullback throughout his journey.

Expressing his enthusiasm, the humble young athlete stated, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.”

Fijian Drua Development and Skills Coach Ifereimi Rawaqa expressed his delight at Nauvasi joining the program. He noted, “He has shown exceptional promise, not only with his natural talent but also with his discipline on the field.” Rawaqa added, “Nauvasi has proven himself as a standout performer in the Deans and also in the Fiji Schoolboys U18. I’m confident that with the right guidance and support, he has the potential to make a significant impact in the years to come. It’s a great opportunity for him to train alongside elite athletes and learn what it takes to compete at the highest level. We’re looking forward to working with him and watching his progress.”

Furthermore, Rawaqa emphasized their excitement to support Nauvasi’s continued growth and journey in rugby. The development program aims to equip young players like him with the necessary resources, coaching, and high-performance environment to transition into the professional realm.

Nauvasi joins a group of 10 other young athletes in the Drua Development squad. With the development contract, these players receive a salary and primarily train with the Super Rugby Pacific squad throughout the week. Additionally, Drua development players have the opportunity to compete for provincial teams in the Skipper Cup, which runs concurrently with Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.
