The Fijian Drua is celebrating the achievement of two of its academy players, Seremaia Salikoro and Sefanaia Naqama, who have both received scholarships from the prestigious Tauranga Boys College in New Zealand. This opportunity comes as a part of the Drua’s strategic partnership with the college, aimed at enhancing the players’ education and rugby skills.
Salikoro, who is currently a student at Natabua High School, has been awarded a three-year scholarship, while Naqama, attending Sila Central High School in Nausori, will benefit from a two-year scholarship. The talents of both players were recognized by Tauranga Boys College’s First XV coach, Regan Ward, and Senior Rugby coordinator Aidan Kuka, who spent a week with the Drua to identify promising athletes.
Fijian Drua General Manager Baden Stephenson expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing that it represents a significant opportunity for both young players. He noted, “The partnership will be a life-changing experience for our first two scholarship holders. They will receive an outstanding education, immerse themselves in a different culture, and engage in an elite rugby environment.” Stephenson assured that both players will return to the Drua after completing their studies.
Kuka also shared his excitement about the collaboration, highlighting Tauranga Boys College’s commitment to nurturing boys into extraordinary individuals. He expressed anticipation for Salikoro and Naqama’s arrival in 2025, underscoring the importance of supporting the international community within their educational framework.
This initiative not only paves the way for a promising future for these young athletes but also signifies the commitment of both the Fijian Drua and Tauranga Boys College to foster talent and personal growth in sports and academics.
In summary, the scholarships offered to Salikoro and Naqama mark a significant milestone for the Fijian Drua as they continue to invest in the development of their players, aiming for both personal and athletic excellence. The collaboration between the Drua and Tauranga Boys College stands to benefit all parties involved and can set a precedent for future talents in the sport.
