The Fijian Drua has proudly inaugurated its inaugural Academy, welcoming 29 promising players under the age of 16 as its first cohort. This new initiative aims to nurture young talent in rugby by offering specialized skills training and development programs over a three-year period.
The players were carefully selected from various secondary schools throughout Fiji, primarily discovered through the competitive Vodafone Deans Secondary Schools tournament. Many of the selected athletes hail from Marist Brothers High School, which contributed six players to the Academy. Suva Grammar School followed closely with four recruits, while Queen Victoria School, reigning champions, proudly placed two players in the program.
Mark Evans, CEO of Fijian Drua, emphasized that the academy is strategically designed to scout and cultivate rugby talent across the nation. He stated that this initiative establishes a sustainable pathway for young athletes aiming for professional rugby careers. Under the guidance of Drua scouts and coaches, the participants will engage in a structured screening program and a rigorous two-day camp to kick off their training.
Ben Takubu, the Programme Lead for the Drua Academy, highlighted the importance of honing the players’ natural abilities alongside the professional demands of elite-level rugby. Players showcasing exceptional talent may have the opportunity to advance to the Drua Development program, providing them a direct pathway to join the esteemed Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Super Rugby Pacific squad.
This exciting development not only supports the growth of rugby in Fiji but also inspires the next generation of athletes to pursue their dreams. The Fijian Drua Academy represents a committed investment in the future of rugby, fostering local talent and offering youth a unique opportunity to excel in the sport.
Overall, this initiative has the potential to elevate Fijian rugby by providing a solid foundation for young players who aspire to reach the highest levels of competition, ultimately strengthening the national team and professional leagues in the future.
