SWIRE Shipping Fijian Drua’s Head Coach Glen Jackson recently conveyed an inspiring message to the 29 promising young athletes who have just been inducted into the inaugural Fijian Drua Academy in Nadi. At the launch of the Academy, Jackson emphasized the importance of this initiative for the future of Fijian rugby, particularly highlighting that these Under-16 players are part of a significant new chapter.
The Fijian Drua Academy aims to cultivate young talent, assisting them in their journey to become professional rugby players, while also focusing on developing them into responsible young adults. Jackson stated that while excelling at rugby is vital, the essence of being associated with the club is about personal growth and character. “Being a good person and a decent rugby player increases your chances of success,” he remarked.
He acknowledged the challenges of pursuing a professional rugby career but reassured the athletes that they would be supported by a dedicated team, including coaches, support staff, and medical professionals, determined to help them reach their fullest potential. Jackson expressed pride in the Drua’s accomplishments in Super Rugby since their entrance into the competition three years ago and emphasized that the current year will be crucial for the growth of both the Academy and the club.
Furthermore, he encouraged the young players to actively participate in their development, emphasizing the importance of curiosity and asking questions rather than staying silent. “Too often, as Fijians, we may not voice our questions. Don’t let that lead to regrets,” Jackson advised.
Fijian Drua CEO Mark Evans elaborated on the Academy’s objectives, which include identifying and nurturing young talents from across the nation, starting with the Under-16 category, to create a sustainable pathway to professional rugby. The program will utilize a collaborative approach involving Drua Scouts, development coaches, and experienced former Flying Fijians.
The excitement surrounding the launch of the Academy offers hope for the future of rugby in Fiji, not only by producing skilled athletes but also by fostering individuals equipped to contribute positively to their communities. This initiative represents a bright pathway for these young players as they embark on their journeys in sport and life.
This positive approach emphasizes the dual focus on athletic prowess and personal development, ensuring that the next generation of rugby players will not only excel on the field but also as contributing members of society.
