The Fijian Cup touch rugby competition is set to kick off today at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, featuring 32 teams and generating excitement for an event that highlights Fijian talent and international camaraderie in sports.
Having started in 2016, the tournament has seen impressive growth, supported by the Government of Fiji, the Fiji National Sports Commission, and Tourism HQ. Tevita Mau, President of Touch Federation Fiji, expressed gratitude for the sponsors who provide a platform for local talent to compete against some of the finest players worldwide.
Mau emphasized that the Fijian Cup goes beyond athletics; it also promotes sports tourism and contributes to the economic development of Fiji. The event offers local athletes a valuable experience while aligning with government strategies to enhance sports tourism, ultimately benefiting the Fijian economy through the influx of visitors drawn by the competition.
This year’s tournament features 32 teams, including eight local ones, competing across four categories: men’s open, women’s open, mixed open, and senior mixed masters. With cash prizes at stake, participants are expected to deliver their best performances on the field.
Mau expressed his thanks to everyone involved in making the tournament possible and wished good luck to all participating teams.
