The Fijian Cup touch rugby competition kicks off today at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, featuring 32 teams eagerly participating in this celebrated event that highlights Fijian talent and fosters international sportsmanship.
Since its inception in 2016, the tournament has seen significant growth, primarily due to backing from the Government of Fiji, the Fiji National Sports Commission, and Tourism HQ. “We are extremely thankful to our sponsors for creating this platform that showcases our touch talent against some of the best in the world,” expressed Tevita Mau, President of Touch Federation Fiji.
Beyond just the sport, Mau emphasized the tournament’s role in promoting sports tourism and boosting Fiji’s economy. He noted that the competition offers local athletes invaluable experience while contributing to government strategies aimed at enhancing sports tourism, ultimately benefiting the economy through incoming visitors.
This year’s tournament features 32 teams, including eight from the local area, competing in four divisions: men’s open, women’s open, mixed open, and senior mixed masters. With cash prizes up for grabs, teams are poised to deliver outstanding performances on the field. “Fans can expect to see high-level touch as all teams aim for the lucrative prizes available,” Mau added.
