The Fijian Cup has provided a valuable platform for local teams, as the touch rugby competition kicked off the sporting festival at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka yesterday. Luke Chapman, the experience director of this three-leg tournament, highlighted the unique exposure local players receive through such events.
Chapman noted that opportunities like this are rare, often only available during major events like the World Cup. He emphasized that players can compete alongside athletes they’ve admired on television and online, enriching their experience.
Local teams, including Flamingo and Waqavuka, showcased their talent on the field, and Chapman acknowledged the contributions of local players in various international teams. The mix of local and international competition adds a distinct flavor to the event, creating a special atmosphere for all participants.
As the touch rugby segment concludes today, the finals are scheduled as follows: Mixed Masters at 12pm, Open Women at 12:35pm, Open Mixed at 1:10pm, and Open Men at 1:45pm.
This event not only fosters local talent but also promotes international camaraderie and sportsmanship, reinforcing the idea that sports can unite and inspire on a global scale.
