The Fijian Cup is set to be an exciting sports festival featuring touch rugby, rugby nines, and rugby sevens, highlighting Fiji’s impressive talent. With participants from both international and local backgrounds vying for a prize pool of $50,000, the event promises to provide a thrilling experience for fans while embracing community service.
Richard Henry, the director of Tourism HQ, noted an impressive response to the touch rugby segment, with 150 team applications, although only 24 positions are available for competition. The rugby nines format will include both men’s and open women’s teams, with aspirations to introduce an under-23 women’s category that could serve as a stepping stone toward the NRL Women’s competition, as well as a legends division to accommodate veteran players.
Rugby sevens will collaborate with the Nadroga Rugby Union, allowing teams to compete across several divisions, including open men’s and women’s, legends, and the under 85s category. The tournament is scheduled for next month, with touch rugby kicking off on November 16, followed by rugby sevens on November 23, and rugby nines on November 30 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmate, and early attendees will be rewarded, as the first 1,000 arrivals will receive complimentary sunglasses.
This event promises to not only showcase athletic talent but also foster community spirit, making it an occasion that brings together both athletes and spectators for a good cause.
The Fijian Cup is a testament to the country’s passion for rugby and commitment to community, setting the stage for an unforgettable showcase of sportsmanship and talent.
