The market for vendors at the Adi Senitoa event is currently taking place in Suva this week. According to Nemani Saronicava, who leads a food business from Namacu, Koro in Lomaiviti, the atmosphere has been positive following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Vendors have returned to the town to utilize the land for their businesses.
Saronicava noted that after five years, the business has seen a revival and is now known as Crave Crazy Fijian Delicacy, which is well-established and has a presence in the major market in Suva. He mentioned that this venture is primarily operated by his family members, who had previously moved away, but have now returned to support their households and are thriving.
He indicated that food prices today vary depending on the quality and local living conditions, which benefits community members and business operators. Current food prices range from $5 to $20 and beyond.
Vendors at the market offer a wide selection, including fish, meat, taro, and various local delicacies brought in from rural areas for sale. They feature traditional dishes such as Kokoda, pork, lovo, soup, and others.
Arieta Ravula, one of the vendors selected by the Fiji Arts Council, emphasized the importance of showcasing a variety of authentic Fijian foods. At 61 years old, hailing from Namata, Bau, Tailevu, she has been actively operating her craft business for the past three years and sees significant growth currently with the support of her relative.
She mentioned that there is no set place for vendors to gather funds for their business essentials, mainly earning from small sales that help them get started. She is grateful for being selected to participate in such events, which honor her skills alongside other women.
Ravula noted that her products range from bags to various accessories, with larger bags priced at $10 and the most expensive reaching $60.
During the week of the Adi Senitoa festival, she observes significant progress in her business operations. Everything she sells has become popular and is well received by the patrons.
She indicated that one day she could earn as much as $1,000 from sales, illustrating the potential success of her endeavors. The income supports her family and contributes positively to her business’s sustainability.
